Bärbel Haldenwang was trained as a geographer at the University of Stellenbosch where she obtained a DPhil degree in medical geography in 1991 – the first candidate in South Africa to obtain a DPhil in this field of study.

In 1992 she joined the Institute for Futures Research (IFR) at the University of Stellenbosch as a senior researcher and currently holds the position of Associate professor at the IFR.
She has been involved in research projects on, for example, the demographic and social impact of HIV/AIDS in South Africa, international migration patterns, urbanization trends in South Africa, ageing of the South African population, projections of the South African population, crime trends in South Africa and food and water security issues.

She has produced approximately 150 IFR publications and 15 publications in scientific journals, and presented approximately 24 papers at domestic and international conferences, workshops and seminars. In 2002 she received the University of Stellenbosch Rector’s award for excellence in research.
