Originally born in Paarl, the entire school career was completed at La Rochelle. After graduating with a B-Mus degree from the University of Stellenbosch, two respective posts were filled; one at Rhenish Primary for almost 6 years, followed by another at Rustenburg High School for Girls in Rondebosch in 1982, simultaneously completing her Bachelor of Arts in German and Latin from the University of South Africa.

Having obtained a B.A.-Honours degree in Latin in 1986 from the University of Cape Town, she taught both Music and Latin at the latter school. A keen interest in Law and Politics led to a transfer from the Department of National Education to Foreign Affairs and shortly after a two-year training course at the Diplomatic Academy in Pretoria, she represented South Africa as First Secretary in the Embassy in Paris, from 1990 until 1993.

A desire to continue post-graduate studying resulted in resignation from the Foreign Office in 1993 and returning to France to complete a two-year Master of Business Administration degree in Sophia Antipolis. Having set up a small business called “International Business Communication”, her linguistic skills and management experience brought about an appointment as part-time lecturer of English for Specific Purposes, at the Law Faculty of the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis in 2001.

While lecturing Legal English to Francophone Law students, she obtained a Masters degree in International Law in 2004 from the Institute for the Law of Peace and Development at the same university. Having decided to write a thesis on reconciling the teaching of English as foreign language and legal concepts, she got a PhD in Education Sciences from the Sorbonne (Paris-III) 29 March 2010, thereby consolidating 51 years’ of studying, which had started at La Rochelle Primary.

The irony of it all is that the promoter of the thesis was originally from the University of La Rochelle in France, completing the cycle of continuous learning as was continually inspired by La Rochelle teachers.
